Acclaimed director Anthony Minghella has died at London’s Charing Cross Hospital at the young age of 54. He suffered a fatal brain haemorrhage early today following surgery in which a growth was removed from his neck last week. He leaves a wife, Carolyn Choa and two children.
This brilliant director and writer was responsible for such wonderful films as The English Patient (director), The Talented Mr Ripley (Screenplay), Cold Mountain (director) Micheal Clayton (producer); his previous films included Truly, Madly, Deeply and Mr Wonderful (all as director).
He also wrote three episodes of the highly popular Inspector Morse series between 1987 and 1990:
* The Dead of Jericho 1987
* Deceived by Flight 1989
* Driven to Distraction 1990…
plus 22 episodes of the popular British soap series Grange Hill between 1983 and 1988.
* He was appointed a CBE in the Queens Birthday Honours List in 2001 and was born on the Isle of Wight in 1954.
* His Italian parents were famous for their ice cream factory.
* He directed five actors to Oscar nominations – Ralph Fiennes, Jude Law, Juliette Binoche, Renee Zellweger & Kristin Scott Thomas.
His current film projects this year -2008- are ‘New York I love you’ (writer; still filming) – ‘The Ninth Life of Louis Drax’ (writer – just announced) and ‘The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency’ ( writer-completed this year).
